Vitalik sells, Bitdeer exits

What $29M in crypto sales tells us about this cycle

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sold another 3,788 ETH over the weekend, worth $7.3 million. Since February 2, he has liquidated 10,723 ETH, totaling $21.7 million at an average price of $2,027 per token.

On the same weekend, Bitdeer Technologies cleared its entire Bitcoin treasury. The Singapore-based mining giant sold 943.1 BTC from reserves plus 184 BTC mined that week. The company now holds zero Bitcoin.

Two of crypto's most watched entities moved millions out of their primary assets within 48 hours. The natural reaction is fear. Here is where those funds are actually going.

Where the money is going

Bitdeer exits Bitcoin to chase AI margins

  • The public miner liquidated its entire treasury to pour capital into data centers and GPU clusters, where revenue per megawatt can reach 25x higher than mining.

  • It raised $368 million before the sale to build, not exit. Bitdeer secured convertible notes and equity for next-gen mining chips and AI computing.

  • Zero Bitcoin on the balance sheet, but still mining at scale. While its corporate wallet now holds zero BTC, Bitdeer continues operating 63.2 EH/s of mining power, about 6% of the global network.

Vitalik sold his ETH to fund ecosystem development

  • The co-founder liquidated 10,723 ETH in February following a public commitment to finance open source software, ZK research, and public goods during Ethereum's "mild austerity" period.

  • $426M still in wallets, proving conviction remains. His ETH sales into a weak market to fund builders signals that development continues through bear cycles, not just during bull runs.

What this means for you

Three lessons from two whales:

1. HODL is fading as a corporate strategy. VanEck calls Bitdeer's sell-off "one of the clearest signs yet" that public companies are moving past the old playbook. Mining giants now prioritize cash flow over conviction.

2. Selling isn't exiting. Bitdeer swapped Bitcoin for AI infrastructure. Vitalik swapped ETH for ecosystem funding. Both are placing bigger bets, just in different directions.

3. Smart money repositions while retail panics.

  • MicroStrategy added 592 BTC last week. They now hold 717,722 Bitcoin.

  • BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley increased their Bitmine positions in Q4.

  • The Fear and Greed Index hit 5 this week, levels last seen during COVID and the FTX collapse.
