Anthropic overtakes OpenAI, ARR hits $30B

3 years of 10x growth mark a historic AI turning point

There's a new leader in AI – and it happened fast. As of April 2026, Anthropic has hit $30B in annual revenue, overtaking OpenAI at $24B. Together, they now control a $54B market – but momentum is clearly shifting.

How the reversal happened

The two companies took very different paths:

  • OpenAI leveraged its first-mover advantage to break through $20 billion ARR by late 2025. But entering 2026, growth has visibly decelerated – the curve has flattened, and the lead has slipped.

  • Anthropic spent 2023 and 2024 building quietly, then broke out sharply in mid-2025. By April 2026, it had completed the overtake – posting $30 billion ARR against OpenAI's $24 billion on the back of a steep, near-vertical growth curve.

Most striking of all: Anthropic has delivered 10x year-on-year revenue growth for three consecutive years.

AI is no longer a one-horse race. OpenAI defined the first phase. But Anthropic's rise marks a shift from dominance to real competition. We're now entering a two-player era, where enterprise AI revenue is contested rather than assumed.
