This week in earnings: PANW, AVGO, MDT, PL

From cybersecurity to space, four sectors in focus

Four companies. Four sectors. All running on AI.

This week's earnings lineup is unusual. Palo Alto Networks, Broadcom, Medtronic, and Planet Labs operate in completely different industries but every one of them is being reshaped by the same technology wave. Here is what institutions are watching, and where the risks are.

Palo Alto Networks (PANW)

The enterprise cybersecurity leader, all-in on a platform model.

  • Earnings date: June 2, after market close

  • Outlook: Moderate buy

  • Analyst view: Morgan Stanley is tracking PANW's aggressive Platformization strategy closely. Free trials and heavy discounts have pressured near-term billings. However, in a 2026 threat landscape driven by agentic AI attacks, that all-in-one security ecosystem is proving its staying power. Morgan Stanley is strongly bullish on NGS ARR (next-generation security annual recurring revenue) accelerating from here.

  • Key focus: Renewal rates for high-value enterprise customers coming off free trials. If NGS ARR growth holds in the 35%–40% range, the short thesis collapses. Watch whether aggressive discounting is eroding gross margins.

Broadcom (AVGO)

Custom AI chips and core infrastructure software — is AVGO becoming the AI hardware revenue engine after Nvidia?

  • Earnings date: June 3, after market close

  • Outlook: Bullish

  • Analyst view: Bank of America's Vivek Arya has long called Broadcom "the most important AI beneficiary outside Nvidia." With Nvidia chips at a premium, hyperscalers like Google (TPU) and Meta are pivoting hard to Broadcom's custom ASIC designs. If AI revenue guidance clears the $11–12 billion consensus, it confirms AVGO is capturing the compute spend that bypasses Nvidia.

  • Key focus: Custom ASIC shipment guidance vs. the $11–12 billion ceiling. Also watch whether VMware's free cash flow margin holds above 45% – the floor needed to sustain Broadcom's dividend. The tail risk: inventory drawdown in legacy broadband and wireless chip lines.

Medtronic (MDT)

A century-old medical device giant rebuilding margins through PFA technology and surgical robotics.

  • Earnings date: June 3, market hours

  • Outlook: Moderate buy

  • Analyst view: JPMorgan has moved to a "steady recovery" view on MDT. Analyst Robbie Marcus cites a full rebound in global surgical volumes post-pandemic. This is Medtronic's fiscal year-end report – the market's focus is squarely on FY2027 full-year guidance. Organic revenue growth holding above 4.5%–5% is the signal that brings traditional value capital back into healthcare.

  • Key focus: FY2027 organic revenue growth guidance above 4.5%–5% – the threshold that triggers a sector rotation. Also watch global hospital penetration of Affera, Medtronic's flagship pulse field ablation platform. Slow rollout is the key downside risk.

Planet Labs (PL)

The world's largest satellite earth-imaging data provider, facing a make-or-break test on defense renewals and cash flow.

  • Earnings date: June 4, after market close

  • Outlook: High risk – speculative only

  • Analyst view: Needham is cautiously optimistic. The core thesis: PL is pivoting from small satellite hardware manufacturing to high-margin AI data analytics subscriptions. Western defense agencies, governments, and agricultural carbon markets are showing strong, recurring demand for daily satellite imagery — a structural tailwind that is real and growing.

  • Key focus: Renewal and expansion scale of Western government and defense contracts (ACV), and whether management gives a clear timeline to adjusted EBITDA breakeven. PL carries heavy satellite depreciation costs — if commercial client growth stays slow, that hardware burden becomes a cash drain fast.

Two themes to watch

PANW and AVGO are AI infrastructure plays – the question is whether AI spend is accelerating fast enough to offset near-term margin pressure. MDT and PL are transformation stories – the question is whether execution is keeping pace. Where you sit on risk appetite this week determines which side of that line makes sense.
