Bitget Wallet Joins Japan's Largest Blockchain Council as Self-Custody Rules Evolve image 0
Japan is entering a new phase of digital asset regulation, and regulators and market participants are increasingly examining how services that let users directly control their own assets should be treated.  Bitget Wallet has joined the Blockchain Collaborative Consortium (BCCC), Japan's largest blockchain industry consortium, entering the country's industry policy discussions for the first time, as a self-custodial wallet serving more than 100 million users worldwide.

A forum for industry and policymakers

Founded in 2016, BCCC was Japan's first blockchain industry association, and it brings together more than 270 companies and organizations across the country's blockchain ecosystem. Its committees cover areas including technology, financial services, DeFi, and stablecoins, and they give members a forum to develop use cases, discuss regulatory issues, and engage with policymakers.

Why the distinction between custody models matters

Japan's regulatory framework for crypto services continues to be refined. New rules covering cryptocurrency service intermediaries took effect in June 2026, and they brought renewed attention to the distinction between custodial platforms, which hold assets on their users' behalf, and self-custodial platforms, where users retain control of their private keys. How that distinction is treated in policy will shape how self-custodial services are regulated in Japan.

What Bitget Wallet contributes

In joining the BCCC, we plan to contribute operational experience from supporting users across global markets and integrations with more than 130 blockchains to discussions on wallet standards, DeFi regulation, and consumer understanding of self-custody. Japan is one of the few markets where technology development and regulatory clarity are advancing in parallel.
As self-custody becomes part of formal policy discussion, we believe the industry needs standards that protect users without losing sight of how these products actually work, while remaining useful for users and workable for the industry.

Building the future of self-custody

Through being a member of the BCCC, we look forward to working with industry peers and policymakers to shape the frameworks and shared understanding that can move self-custody forward, toward a future where it becomes a natural part of how people manage their money every day.
