Q: How Can I Participate in BGD Labs's Ecosystem?

Users participate by using the protocols BGD Labs builds, such as Aave. Developers can also contribute by reviewing BGD's open-source code on GitHub or participating in DAO governance discussions where BGD proposals are debated.

Q: What Sets BGD Labs Apart from Competitors?

BGD Labs stands out for its specialized expertise in the Aave codebase and its 'Security before pace' philosophy, prioritizing protocol safety over rapid feature expansion to protect user funds.

Q: What are the Risks Associated with BGD Labs?

The main risk is 'key-person risk,' as the group's departure from a project like Aave can create a temporary technical void. However, they manage this by providing extensive documentation and transitional support to ensure continuity.

What is BGD Labs?

BGD Labs (Bored Ghosts Developing) is a high-level technical initiative and development collective focused on building core infrastructure for the DeFi and Web3 ecosystems. Founded by key technical contributors to the Aave protocol, BGD Labs specializes in creating secure, scalable, and decentralized software systems that power major decentralized finance platforms. Its primary mission is to foster organizational decentralization and maintain high security standards in the evolving blockchain landscape.

How Does BGD Labs Work?

BGD Labs operates as a service provider to decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), most notably the Aave DAO. The team utilizes its deep technical expertise to design, implement, and maintain critical subsystems such as liquidity protocols, governance frameworks, and safety mechanisms. Their workflow involves proposal-based engagements where they commit to a specific scope of work—ranging from protocol upgrades to chain expansions—ensuring all code is open-source and rigorously audited for the community.

What Makes BGD Labs Unique?

BGD Labs is unique due to its origin as a group of former Aave core developers who chose to remain independent contributors rather than centralizing power. They are the primary architects of Aave v3, often called the 'crown jewel' of DeFi, and have pioneered the 'Umbrella' safety infrastructure. Their commitment to 'Security before pace' and their refusal to work with direct competitors of the protocols they serve ensures a high level of dedication and alignment with the communities they support.

Who Are the Founders of BGD Labs?

BGD Labs was founded in early 2022 by three prominent Aave community members with extensive technical backgrounds. The most prominent founder is Ernesto Boado, who previously served as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the Aave Genesis Team. Boado and his co-founders played instrumental roles in the design and architecture of Aave’s initial versions and have since established BGD Labs as an independent engineering powerhouse in the DeFi space.

What Key Events Have There Been for BGD Labs?

The most significant recent event for BGD Labs is the announcement in February 2026 that it will conclude its four-year service engagement with the Aave DAO on April 1, 2026. This decision followed a strategic rift regarding the development of Aave v4 and concerns over growing centralization within the Aave ecosystem. Other milestones include the successful rollout of Aave v3 across multiple chains and the development of the Governance v3 system.

Project Announcements

In February 2026, BGD Labs announced a transitional security retainer proposal. If approved by the DAO, BGD Labs will provide two months of critical security support (April–June 2026) for Aave v3 and governance systems to ensure a safe handover to new maintainers. They also committed to publishing comprehensive documentation and maintenance guidelines for all core systems they built.
