What is CleverCoin?

CleverCoin was one of the first Bitcoin exchanges based in the Netherlands, established to provide a fast, secure, and user-friendly platform for European traders to buy and sell digital assets. Founded in Eindhoven, it gained prominence as a graduate of the prestigious Boost VC accelerator and became a key player in the Western European crypto market before being acquired by the global exchange Kraken in 2016.

How Does CleverCoin Work?

The platform functioned as a centralized digital asset exchange, utilizing a high-performance matching engine to facilitate trades between fiat currencies (primarily the Euro) and Bitcoin. It integrated advanced banking partnerships to offer rapid Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transfers, allowing users to fund their accounts and execute trades with minimal latency while maintaining strict regulatory compliance.

What Makes CleverCoin Unique?

CleverCoin was unique for its early focus on regulatory compliance and its introduction of leveraged trading to the Dutch market. It was among the first in the region to establish formal partnerships with traditional banks, bridging the gap between legacy finance and the emerging cryptocurrency sector, which ultimately made it a prime acquisition target for expanding global platforms.

Who Are the Founders of CleverCoin?

The project was co-founded by Christian de Kok, who served as CEO, and Karsten Nilsen, who served as CTO. Both founders brought extensive expertise in IT solutions and software development; following the successful sale of CleverCoin to Kraken, they pivoted their focus toward providing specialized IT business solutions.
