What is Square Enix?

Square Enix is a legendary Japanese video game publisher and developer renowned for iconic franchises like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts. In the Web3 space, the company has launched its flagship project, SYMBIOGENESIS, which serves as a 'digital collectible art project' and a narrative-driven NFT game designed to bridge the gap between traditional gaming and blockchain technology.

How Does Square Enix Work?

The project operates primarily on the Ethereum and Polygon blockchains (with recent expansions to Arbitrum and Soneium). Players use MetaMask wallets to hold NFT characters that act as keys to unlock specific story chapters. The 'gameplay' occurs through a browser-based interface where users solve mysteries, find hidden items, and collaborate via Discord to progress through a multi-chapter story that culminates in a world-shaping mission.

What Makes Square Enix Unique?

SYMBIOGENESIS is unique for its 'Narrative-unlocked NFT entertainment' model. Unlike traditional RPGs, the game's progression is tied to NFT ownership and community information sharing. It features 10,000 unique characters, each with its own backstory, and a high-stakes 'World Mission' where only three players are chosen to decide the ultimate fate of the game's floating continent.

Who Are the Founders of Square Enix?

The Web3 initiatives are led by the executive leadership of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. Key figures include Yosuke Matsuda (former President who pioneered the blockchain strategy) and current President Takashi Kiryu, who has continued to emphasize 'blockchain entertainment' as a medium-term growth pillar. The project is developed internally by Square Enix's specialized business divisions.
