What is TerraPay?

TerraPay is a global cross-border payments infrastructure provider that facilitates the movement of money for businesses and financial institutions across bank accounts, mobile wallets, and cards. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in London, its mission is to democratize access to financial services by making low-value international payments as affordable, safe, and convenient as high-value transactions. The company connects diverse payment systems through a single API, driving financial inclusion in underserved regions worldwide.

How Does TerraPay Work?

TerraPay operates as a global clearing and settlement engine that simplifies money movement via a single-point-of-integration API. It acts as an interoperable bridge between disparate payment systems, routing transactions from Money Transfer Operators (MTOs), banks, and marketplaces into mobile wallets or bank accounts. The technology utilizes a hybrid network that supports local bank rails and over 3 billion mobile wallets, employing automated AML/KYC screening and AI-driven fraud controls to ensure real-time, compliant settlements across five continents.

What Makes TerraPay Unique?

TerraPay is unique for its extensive regulatory footprint, holding over 30 licenses and approvals in global markets, which serves as a significant competitive moat. Unlike traditional correspondent banking, TerraPay emphasizes 'micro-remittances,' processing payments as small as $13 with sub-second decisioning. Key use cases include creator economy payouts, travel management, and global workforce remittances. Recently, it pioneered the 'stablecoin sandwich' approach, using stablecoins to bridge fiat-to-fiat transactions for increased speed and reduced treasury prefunding requirements.

Who Are the Founders of TerraPay?

TerraPay was founded by a team of fintech and telecom veterans, including Ambar Sur (CEO), Ram Sundaram (COO), Ani Sane (CBO), and Akbar Hussain (Chief Legal & Compliance Officer). Ambar Sur has over two decades of experience in mobile payments and was a key figure at Mahindra Comviva. Ram Sundaram brings 29 years of management and consulting expertise in payment systems and IT. Ani Sane and Akbar Hussain both have deep backgrounds in global business and legal compliance, respectively, particularly within the African and Asian financial sectors.
