Baki

Baki provides synthetic African stablecoins in a scalable manner to bring African currencies on-chain. Collateralized with USDC, Baki allows users to mint zUSD (US Dollar), zNGN (Nigerian Naira), zZAR (South African Rand) and zXAF (Central African CFA). zTokens can be swapped for one another without any slippage, providing infinite FX liquidity.
What is Baki?
Baki is an infinite-liquidity foreign exchange (FX) protocol built on the Avalanche blockchain, designed to facilitate slippage-free swaps between African currencies. It introduces synthetic on-chain assets, known as zTokens, pegged to various African currencies, thereby creating the first on-chain implementation of African stablecoins. Baki aims to mitigate the scarcity of US dollars in emerging markets by providing access to dollar markets at competitive rates.
How Does Baki Work?
Users deposit stablecoins like USDC into the Baki protocol to mint overcollateralized zTokens, such as zUSD, zNGN, zCFA, and zZAR, representing US Dollars, Nigerian Naira, West African CFA, and South African Rand, respectively. These zTokens can be seamlessly swapped at central bank rates without slippage. The protocol ensures that all zTokens are overcollateralized, maintaining a minimum collateralization ratio of 150%, to safeguard the system's stability.
What Makes Baki Unique?
Baki offers infinite liquidity for African currencies, allowing users to perform FX transactions at central bank rates without slippage. It democratizes access to favorable exchange rates and enables assets to be natively quoted in local currencies on-chain, eliminating the need for fiat-priced on-ramps or US dollar-denominated assets. Additionally, Baki's architecture ensures that a unit of zUSD can always be exchanged for an equivalent value in any supported currency, addressing liquidity fragmentation issues.
Who Are the Founders of Baki?
Baki is developed by Canza Finance, a crypto startup aiming to provide a permissionless, on-chain suite of DeFi products using tokenized African fiat currencies. The team includes Victor Teixeira, Chief Crypto Economist at Canza Finance, who has been instrumental in launching Baki on the Avalanche blockchain.
