What is Farallon Capital?

Farallon Capital Management, L.L.C. is a prominent global investment management firm that operates as a multi-strategy hedge fund. Founded in 1986, its mission is to provide institutional investors, such as university endowments and foundations, with extraordinary risk-adjusted returns through a disciplined, research-driven approach. While primarily a traditional financial institution, it has recently expanded its reach into the digital asset space by investing in Bitcoin ETFs.

How Does Farallon Capital Work?

The firm employs a bottom-up fundamental research process to identify undervalued investment opportunities across various asset classes, including equities, credit, real estate, and merger arbitrage. In the context of the crypto market, Farallon Capital works by allocating capital to regulated investment vehicles like spot Bitcoin ETFs (e.g., Grayscale Bitcoin Trust), allowing the firm to gain exposure to digital assets within a traditional institutional framework.

What Makes Farallon Capital Unique?

Farallon Capital is unique for its 'absolute return' model, which focuses on generating positive returns regardless of market direction. It was one of the first hedge funds to successfully manage university endowment funds. Unlike native crypto projects, Farallon brings high-level institutional credibility and a 40-year track record of capital preservation to the digital asset ecosystem, bridging the gap between TradFi (Traditional Finance) and the crypto market.

Who Are the Founders of Farallon Capital?

Farallon Capital was founded by Thomas Steyer, a well-known American businessman, philanthropist, and former presidential candidate. Steyer’s expertise in risk arbitrage, honed at firms like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, laid the foundation for Farallon's success. Today, the firm is led by Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer Nicolas Giauque, who has been with the firm since 1998.
