What is Stacks?

Stacks is a Bitcoin layer that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps) to use Bitcoin as an asset and settle transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain. It extends Bitcoin's functionality without modifying its core protocol, aiming to create a decentralized internet and digital economy.

How Does Stacks Work?

Stacks operates as an independent blockchain connected to Bitcoin through its unique Proof of Transfer (PoX) consensus mechanism. This allows Stacks to leverage Bitcoin's security while enabling the development of smart contracts and dApps. Transactions on Stacks are settled on the Bitcoin blockchain, ensuring immutability and security.

What Makes Stacks Unique?

Stacks introduces smart contracts and dApps to the Bitcoin ecosystem without altering Bitcoin's base layer. Key features include the Clarity smart contract language, designed for predictability and security, and the PoX consensus mechanism, which anchors Stacks to Bitcoin, providing a secure and scalable platform for developers.

Who Are the Founders of Stacks?

Stacks was founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea in 2013. Muneeb Ali, a computer science researcher from Princeton University, focused his Ph.D. thesis on Blockstack, the precursor to Stacks. Ryan Shea co-led the project, aiming to address issues of internet privacy and security by building a decentralized internet.
